The Old Pump History

The Old Pump is situated at the centre of the original village of Barlow at junction of Hackney Lane and Wilkin Hill opposite the village pump which dates back to 1840.

The village of 'Barleie' (meaning 'Barley') was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 but it was not until the 17th century that the name was changed to Barlow.  It was around this time that the original stable block and smithy of The Old Pump were constructed.

Also at the Hackney Lane/Wilkin Hill junction is the Coronation Tree that was planted in 1911 to commemorate the crowning of King George V.

Across the road from The Old Pump is the famous Norman Church of St. Lawrence, which dates from around 1150 and was restored in 1867.
